| I'll sum it up with this: I'm a christian and I'm a photographer | Jul 1, 2005 |
There's a number of things I love doing:
1. I teach natural science in a christian seminary in Makati - The Asian Seminary of Christian Ministries. I've been doing it for 3 years now and I still enjoy what I do.
2. I do freelance photography. Been at it for 3-4 years now, depending on where I'd benchmark myself. The fields in photography that I have been into are:
a. Church photography: This is where I began doing photography and which I consider my training ground. It's a laborious work that has no temporal rewards. I don't accept payment for services rendered to church or any para-church ministry. How much do I love it? I'll put it this way, I would bear to let go of all my photography work, except for documenting the church. Church Photography rocks!
b. Wedding photography: Been shooting 3 years now, on and off, like I do some. Weddings are really fun and momentous and I enjoy being part of couple's and friend's lives, documenting their romance, joy, celebration, and love. I don't do traditional wedding photography, the one's where the poses are dry. I put in a lot of candids in my weddings, and lately some experimentation in lighting. I shoot weddings unobtrusively, once in a while coming in to encourage some poses, but I let people be and don't control how they express themselves in front of the camera. It's their moment after all, and not the photographer's.
c. Editorial photography: Been with Mabuhay Magazine for 5 months now and I'm enjoying it. My work there is moderately paced, giving me a lot of time to compose, relax, and really enjoy what I do, minus the stress of regular events. I am grateful to Kim and Jun for that oppurtunity.
d. Events photography: All other events except wedding. The variety is exciting. The pay is something you'd have to be good at negotiating. =)
e. Special Projects: This is where other stuff fall in (Kung Fu Kids cover photo, Eat Bulaga documentation, Super Inggo publicity, National Book Development Board Reading Campaign, family portraits, various media publicity, etc)
f. Personal stuff: Personal time for myself. No deadlines, no requirements, no boss. All the experimentation and practice one needs (as long a the schedule permits). I make sure I have an ample amount of this in my schedule.
3. Making new friends and introducing them to Christ. I'm serious. Go ask my friends. God can take away everything in my life, even photography and my cameras, but I'd ask Him to leave this one behind. I wouldn't be the person I am had not Christ stepped into my destitute and meaningless life 5 years ago. I attend a wonderful church - Destiny Ministries Manila. 'Might invite you one of these days. =)

edwinlouella wrote on May 27 Wow I love reading about your ministry. I also have a background in teaching and science (I used to be a teacher, majored in biology in college). And I am also a Christian, aspiring to be a photographer. Your name was given to me by a coworker, Ranel Reyes. God bless you! |
